Hello Again...

Sorry to my fellow Divas about my hiatus, as it turns out moving far away makes you really tired.

On my journey up here, I had a brief stayover with my brother in Knoxville, TN. He is the music director for WUTK, The University of Tennessee's radio station. I was lucky enough to get to sit in on his radio show two mondays ago, give my shout-out over the air, and help compile a playlist. I always saw a DJ as someone who sits in a booth and puts cd's in a player. Well, they do do this, but they do so much more. All I can tell you is that I found it all extremely complicated.

When it comes to things like movies and alcoholic beverages, my brother and I have VAAAASTLY different tastes. When it comes to music, I trust him implicitly. So here is a little collaboration between me and my bro...a new playlist, just in time for summer.

Frog Eyes - Sound Travels from the snow to the dar
Push to Talk - Talk is Cheap
Modest Mouse - Interstate 8
Pinback - AFK
Autolux - Turmstile Blues
Maritime -- Calm
Aloha - Weekend
Statistics - Another Space Song
Liars - The other Side of Mt. Heart Attack
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Bang
The Advantage - Wizards & Warriors
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
Deadboy & The Elephantmen - Stop I'm already Dead
Sense Field - Cariou
Far - Punch Drunk
Rival Schools - Good Things
Frank Jordan - Redefined
Dilute - Apple
Frog Eyes - The Oscillator Song

Lordy lordy!

It's been TOO long since I did my part and gave you guys some dirt on food- ha ha that sounds gross, SO here you goooooo!! WHEEEE!!!

I tried the new McDonald's Asian Chicken Salad, here' s the description from their site :

"A Harmonious blend of crisp greens, warm orange-glazed chicken (grilled or crispy), snow peas, edamame, mandarin oranges, and toasted almonds. Add the new Newman's Own Low-Fat Sesame Ginger dressing, and we're talking pure inspiration. "

On a scale of 1-5 I give it a 3 overall. It was good, but not great, and for the calories and fat involved, not worth it to me. There was lots of edamame which is a raw soybean, and while it tasted ok in my opinion, there were too many of them. They overwhelmed the salad. I really liked the fresh mandarin oranges (which I wasn't sure I would), nice surprise. By far the best part about this salad was the dressing. MAN that stuff's good! That absolutely wins hands down over the Newman's Own Lo-fat Balsamic Vinaigrette. If I were going to go to McDonald's again for a salad, I would get the grilled chicken Cesar salad with the Newman's Own Low-Fat Sesame dressing.

So there you have it- run with it.

TV Finales

I'm still reeling from last night's Grey's Anatomy finale so all I can muster up is a list for your reference of season finales, series finales and fall schedules that have been released so far. Mark your calendars and set your tivos! (resource: zap2it.com) My recommendations are in bold.

SEASON & SERIES FINALES:
Tuesday, May 16
8 p.m. 9 p.m. 10 p.m. I love that Boston Legal is receiving a 2 hour finale but I hate that it's up against Scrubs because I don't have the means to record!! Argh! You know they are 2 of my "don't miss" shows! SVU has been doing excellent Elliott development this season - it'll be really interesting to see where the finale takes him.

Wednesday, May 17
8 p.m. 10 p.m. I haven't been following The Amazing Race this season but the finales are usually a fun ride. Bones I have, of course, been following intently due to it starring David Boreanaz. But despite my bias for him, the finale seems to have good hype. I think it'll be worth the viewing.

Thursday, May 18
8 p.m. 9 p.m. 10 p.m.
That 70's Show was never a blockbuster in the ratings and at times - downright cheesy, but this group of characters were always loveable. You were pretty much guaranteed a laugh when you watched an episode. The finale should be sweet and emotional with returning stars. I have one complaint about the finale already but I'll save that for next week's article. Will & Grace, to me, is just tired but it could be a very fun trip down memory lane to the fun and quirkiness of the early seasons.

Friday, May 19
8 p.m. 9 p.m. 9:30 p.m.
  • 'Wonder Showzen' (MTV2)
10 p.m.
I don't really have any recommendations here. I've watched Conviction a few times because it's got an Angel and SVU alum. It's a decent show but not in the "don't miss" level.

Saturday, May 20
11p.m. On to Sunday.....
Sunday, May 21
7 p.m. 8 p.m. 8:30 p.m. 9 p.m. Cold Case always brings it. The Simpsons still has it after all these years. I know Desperate Housewives has fallen off of most people's watch list. But I still really enjoy it. I find it quite funny. I feel a shift in the characters coming on.

Monday, May 22
8 p.m. 9 p.m. 9:30 p.m. 10 p.m. I don't actually watch any of these shows but the Alias series finale is worth watching just as any show that has developed a diehard fan base. I hope JJ Abrams gives Sidney a happy ending - the poor girl deserves one. If nothing else, Amy Acker's performance will probably make the viewing worth it.

Tuesday, May 23
9 p.m.
This show has developed insanely loyal fans for a reason. Fantastic writing, although the set drives me insane.

Wednesday, May 24
8 p.m. 9 p.m.
  • 'Lost' (ABC)
  • 'Ghost Hunters' (Sci Fi)
10 p.m.
  • 'Top Chef' (Bravo)
If Lost doesn't give us something concrete in this finale - I promise not to recommend it to you next season.

Sunday, June 4
9 p.m.
10 p.m.
I'm sure many Tivo's will be set to HBO on this day. However, having never had HBO, I've never seen The Sopranos.

Monday, June 5
8 p.m.
9:30 p.m.
Yawn.

Friday, June 9
9 p.m.
  • 'Doctor Who' (Sci Fi)
10:30 p.m.
  • 'The Chelsea Handler Show' (E!)
I'm intrigued by the concept of Doctor Who and I usually agree with 50 million English fans but the one snippet I saw of this show was confusing. Maybe I can catch up with season 1 in reruns and keep you better informed next season.

Tuesday, July 4
9 p.m. For some reason, I really dislike Rebecca Romijn

Interesting forthcoming news from the "scrambling" network NBC....
Scrubs has had a full season order but will be delayed until midseason like they did this year. NBC wants to use the time slot to introduce new shows like they did with My Name Is Earl.

Also, NBC will run the 13th season of ER without repeats. They finally realized this hurts their ratings.

NEXT WEEK:
Fall Schedules and an in-depth look at the new shows.

Music To Set the Mood

I'm going to make a desperate attempt to not gush over Scrubs or Grey's Anatomy in this post, which everyone knows I'm prone to do.

Instead, I want to make sure everyone is aware of one of the best dramas on current television: Cold Case (CBS, Sunday). It's a crime drama focusing on Det. Lily Rush and her fellow officers as they investigate old murders. What really sets this show apart from the thousand other crime dramas on television is the soundtrack and the casting.
  • Since the crime may take place in the 1990's or the 1940's - the music varies. The staff does an excellent job of choosing songs with great care that have strong lyrical connections as well as the "mood" feeling.
  • Secondly, this show has "double casting". Meaning, that because the show depends on the past to reveal their crimes yet the detectives must interview people in present day, there are often 2 people cast for each part - a young version and an older version. The casting is EXCELLENT. I've often been amazed at how well the young version and old version of a character matches. And surprisingly the acting is not compromised.
This past week's episode made fantastic use of the tune "Only Time Will Tell" by Asia when the intro section of synthezier's gave the turning point into the conclusion that wonderful 80's movie feel. But what also made the use of this song particularly striking is that it was used against the subplot - Det. Valens (Danny Pino) beats a child molester (Christopher Goodson) to a bloody pulp in an alley. It was a visually stunning and emotional turn for Det. Valens.

A funny thing about this episode for me was that one of the guest stars was Suzanne Whang - host of House Hunters on HGTV.

Today's Dream Date: Danny Pino
(I've always wondered why he doesn't get more attention. He's quite the yummy Latino.)

I always also try to discuss a film that I've recently viewed. Sunday I was a complete vegetable - laying in bed enjoying the comfort snuggling with my dogs while the rain poured outside. A perfect day for TCM.

During this day of nothingness I watched The Glass Slipper (1955) starring Leslie Caron and Michael Wilding. It's a version of Cinderella. I found this one incredibly cute. Michael Wilding was dissappointing as the Prince but he can be overlooked because Caron is so charming. There was one line in it that has stayed with me. When the Prince's valet asks him "Why?" in regards to this commoner, the prince replies, "Every man has his weakness. I knew a man that loved fat women - women with rolls. I knew another man who fell in love every time he got slapped. This is my weakness. So what of it?" I liked that line.
The ballet sequences are not of G. Kelly caliber but amusing. And I would have prefered the ending to be a bit different but all in all, this is a great family film for a rainy day!

Oh, and I must make one Scrubs shoutout - Glarkware now has a Dr. Acula shirt for sale!

Divas Do it Right

Last night my fellow Divas (plus one) came over for Craft & Pizza night. To celebrate my last full weekend in town, it turned into Art Bar-Jager Bomb night, but we won't get into all of that. I want to talk for a second about my new obsession: Crafts.

I've never been much of a crafty person. I didn't sew, I didn't paint, I didn't crochet or knit. So I'm pretty much still a beginner, and today want to recommend some easy crafts for beginners.

1. Scrapbooking. Definitely the most time-consuming crafts, it can also get very pricy. However, you can do this within a budget if you don't go wild buying decorative paper and embellishments. My sugguestion would be to first try a mini-scrapbook, they're about 12 pages. This way you won't break your bank and you'll give yourself a crash course. Some supplies you'll need would be Decorative paper, Adhesive (I really like the roll-on kind that comes in this little mouse), photo corners, embellishments. That's where you start to sink into the money pit, not because they are over-priced, but because once you start buying them it's really difficult to stop. However, if you pace yourself, you could have a new obsession too. Check with your local craft stores and see if they offer scrapbooking classes, often they do this for free.

2. Cardmaking. A great way to use your leftover art paper from scrapbooking is using it for Cards. Get yourself a pack of Blank cards (the bigger pack the better, you want to allow for a few to get tossed)and have fun. A few other things you might need would be a ruler, adhesive, maybe some rub-on stickers and rubber stamps. You can also use this as a chance to try out your calligraphy skills and grab a Calligraphy Pen. Or you could just use your handy inkjet printer, if you have one. My favorite go-to craft resource, Cat Morley, even has instructions on how to make pretty Stitched Cards, super easy!

3. Jewlery Alright, yet another one that will potentially sink you into a money pit. In this case, it CAN be the retailers that break you. There are a few bead retailers here in Columbia that aren't part of the craft superstores that sell better beads, but have them extravagently priced. A tip for the patient? Keep your eyes open online, buy large orders of beads in bulk. Ebay has a whole category called 'loose beads'. Also, keep your eyes open at local flea markets and, surprisingly enough, New Age shops. A lot of these will carry natural stone beads at a more affordable price. If you are a jewlery beginner, a pre-made kit might not be a bad idea for you. Purchase a couple of the cheaper ones, just to teach yourself the basics. A few things you might need outside that kit include Needlenose pliers, scissors, maybe some extra jewlery wire, and if you prefer to use it you can purchase Beading Needles. Once again check with your local craft stores to see if they offer classes, as this is one craft that can get tricky.

4. Needlepoint This is my most recently acquired craft, thanks to the Stitch-it-kit . The kit contains everything you need to get started, including lots of adorable Iron-on transfer patterns. The iron-ons can be used more than once, and the booklet gives instructions on the best way to copy these or make your own.

5. Murder Your T-shirts I am suppossed to be reviewing Generation T: 108 ways to Transform Your T-Shirt for another site, so I decided to take some of my old T-shirts that were dustrags-in-waiting and give them new life. There are lots of styles that require sewing, as well as quite a few "no sew" designs. If you are faint of heart at the thought of sewing, not to worry. This book is perfect for a beginner, it gives you a very detailed illustrated how-to on different types of stitches. And if you screw it up, you can still use it for a dustrag, right?

On the Diva Tip

Lets take a departure from my normal food obsessed post to give a few tips for the summer and all around help!

Now that sunless tanners are ALL the rage- it's a good opportunity for me to talk about another aspect that deserves some thought-- your face.
There are several options to consider when trying to match your face to your body (please don't tell me you're not trying):

There is of course sunless tanner for face. I would recommend Jergens - Natural Glow Face. It's got moisturizer in it, that prevents splotchy-ness and there are a variety of color options for different skin tones.

Of course some people (like myself) either have very sensitive skin or are unsure about putting such a product on their face, but there are still OPTIONS!! Don't give up- and definitely DON'T skip it. Light face+dark body= weird

There are a slew of bronzing products you could use instead- I really like Physicians' Formula- they have several different varieties but all of them look great!
Just don't go crazy! A little goes a LONG way with bronzers. You want to put them in the typical places you would normally tan, with a fat brush if you have one. The cheek bones (if you don't know where yours are, smile when you put it on, that goes for blush too. Just start on the apple of your cheek and brush upward toward your ear), a little on the forehead, end of your chin, and down the sides of your nose. People will be asking if you just came back from vacation in no time!!

One other options- which just happens to be the one I've used today- is tinted moisturizer. They come in very universal shades, most have sunblock in them (which I LOVE) and are a great alternative to foundation. You can't beat that deal!

I've been using Estee Lauder's - Daywear Plus but that's only cause I used to work for them and it was free.
If you don't have $30 to drop on Ol' Estee, I'm sure Covergirl and the like, make something very similar, just don't forget your SPF!!

Next Wednesday look for my food review of McDonald's Asian Chicken Salad!

Smooches!

The week in review

Please bear with us as we make changes/upgrades to the look of Divas. We're trying to move toward a more customized look but unfortunately have to do it around our busy schedules. What would you, our readers, like to see? And no nudity. (sorry J)

Grey's Anatomy ~ this show is just so hot. The writing is that good. My reactions to last night's episode: I would have kicked Alex's ass up and down those halls. But Addisson handled it with class - as I expect she would. I really love her character. I love the way G.A. often begins the episode with a phrase/action and then ends the episode with the same phrase/action but it takes on a different meaning. Very thoughtful writing. I love how George and Burke have bonded and out of it we receive this jealous, petty Yang. What an unlikely trio.

I'm falling in love with Denny myself. Not just Denny - Jeffrey Dean Morgan - the actor that plays Denny and John Winchester on Supernatural (another great show I've written about). I know myself too well to not expect to post often about gorgeous men that will be my Dream Dates. So from here on out - I shall just identify them as my Dream Date.

Today's Dream Date: Jeffrey Dean Morgan (btw, he's not a bad actor!)

This weekend, I also watched "The Heiress" starring Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Clift (1949).

This was a tremendously good movie. Olivia was always able to play a victim well but her turn into a hardened woman was exceptional. Clift was young, vital and gave a perfectly balanced portrayal. de Havilland plays Catherine, the daughter of a wealthy widower that lacks the social graces of the other ladies of her day. And despite all her best efforts and being a wonderfully kind girl, her father is emotionally distant and unloving constantly comparing her to her deceased mother which he has put upon a pedestal. Enter Morris Townsend a handsome young man that has used up his estate traveling around Europe. Catherine and Morris fall quickly in love and wish to be married but Catherine's father is convinced that Morris is only after her money. Catherine must choose between the two men she loves most in the world and the end result may crush her.

Extremely strong performances by all actors. It is an almost single set film which means it is dialogue heavy - my favorite type of film.

Also heads up for this coming week:
there are only 2 episodes left for Bones this season and they will both be heavy character development episodes. This week will feature more background story for Seeley Booth portrayed by my #1 Dream Man, David Boreanaz. This show keeps getting better. I have high hopes for these episodes and season 2.
